Loose cannon loves covering athletics. It's all about statistics, comparative study, brute strength, technique, tactics and sometimes finesse. Loose cannon had the good fortune of covering two Asian Athletics Championships or widely known as the Asian Track and Field meet or ATF, in Jakarta in 2000 and Manila three years later.

The 2009 edition will be held in Guangzhou next month. So far only five athletes have earned a ticket to board the plane to China - high jumper Lee Hup Wei (picture), pole vaulter Roslinda Samsu, hurdler Noraseela Mohd Khalid, hammer thrower Tan Song Hwa and Melinder Kaur (3,000m steeplechase) .

The MAAU are expected to add a few more names after this weekend's national championship.

Melinder is a shining star. She has lowered the women's steeplechase national record three times in a matter of six weeks this year.

The national championship has lost its lustre, no doubt. But for the elite few who continue to toil and persevere in pursuit of their dreams, it remains the platform for recognition.
